stummi

Stummi is a food delivery app designed to streamline the food delivery experience for individuals dealing with food allergies and sensitivities.

Background

Stummi was created as my main and final project in a UX/UI course from Google. We were asked to generate or find a problem and design a digital product that gives a solution for it.

Growing up in my household, there were a lot of food sensitivities and allergies. The worst of them coming from my brother Willie. Willie is also autistic, so what he ate heavily impacted his moods and mental health, therefore, it was imperative that we made sure he avoided certain foods.

This became a problem because whenever we would order take out or go out to eat, it would be difficult to find options for him. Not every place was able to accommodate to his needs, and often we were left having to leave him behind or cook something on the side for him. Even when we were able to find a place with options, we never truly knew what was used to make the food.

After some light research, it became clear to me that this was a common issue for people with allergies. So I decided to solve this problem by designing an app just like all the others, but better. I designed a food delivery app with the ability to filter out your options according to which restaurants can accommodate your allergy. I also included ingredient lists for each item, so the user knows exactly what is going into their meal.

Problem

Users with allergies struggle when ordering meals due to insufficient allergen information and options when using delivery services. This project aims to ease this challenge by offering a user-friendly app enabling personalized filters and detailed ingredient lists, ensuring a safer and more informed dining experiences.

Solution and Goals

When beginning this project, I wanted it to feel familiar. I wanted all the essential functions for a food delivery app to be included, but with an identifiable UI and more accessible features. I saw that individual companies have done their own solutions regarding food allergies but I wanted something new, fresh and simple. Something with a comfortable self explanatory layout and with only exactly what you ask for to avoid choice overload.

User Research

To get a better perspective on the experience of ordering food for this particular target audience, I conducted a survey using Google Forms. I had 10 people who order out regularly, with various food preferences answer it. Here are some of their answers and data that was collected.

How often do you order food for delivery, and do you find it easy to discover suitable food options that meet your dietary requirements each time?

"I order food for delivery about twice a week. Finding suitable options is hit or miss, sometimes it's hard to filter out foods that align with my allergies."

“I order food online occasionally. Maybe once or twice every couple of weeks. I don’t have too many preferences so my experience is alright but sometimes, it’s hard to avoid certain ingredients when I am trying out new diets because I don’t know what the foods are cooked with.”

“I order food online almost every day. It's a struggle to consistently search for food I can actually eat. Most apps lack proper filtering options, making the process time-consuming.”

"I order food for delivery quite often, around three times a week. It's frustrating to sift through menus, hoping to find options. The lack of consistency in app offerings is a big hurdle.”

On a scale of 1 to 10, how confident do you feel when ordering food online, considering your dietary needs?

"I'd say a 7. I've become adept at spotting certain keywords, but there's always that lingering doubt. More detailed information on apps would definitely boost my confidence."

"Probably a 6. My confidence comes from experience, but I know it’s far from perfect. Having consistent labeling and ingredients on apps would make a huge difference."

"I'm at a 5. It really depends on the app – some are better than others at providing allergen info. Knowing that risk keeps me from being too confident."

"I'm around a 3. It's nerve-wracking because even if I'm cautious, mistakes can happen. Apps that prioritize user safety would make a significant difference in my confidence."

Wireframe Sketches

I went through several rounds of crazy 8’s and wire-framing to properly develop the information architecture and user flow. I did this until I was happy with my choices and could continue onto the digital wireframes
